Chiang Rai, Thailand
-
Laos, Laos
Chiang Rai Bus Terminal 2 directly to Huay Xai in Laos (or to Chiang Khong if taking a local bus)
The direct international bus is by far the easiest option because it waits while you complete immigration and then drives across Friendship Bridge 4 into Laos.
Once you’ve crossed into Laos, stay one night in Huay Xai.
-
Huay Xai, Laos
Once you’ve crossed into Laos, stay one night in Huay Xai.
The next morning, head to the Huay Xai Slow Boat Pier and board the famous Mekong slow boat.
Huay Xai → Pakbeng (about 6–7 hours)
-
Pak Beng, Laos
Over night stay here before taken the second day on the slow boat to Luang Prabang
-
Luang Prabang, Laos
Don’t rush it. Enjoy:
* Kuang Si Waterfalls
* Mount Phousi at sunset
* Night Market
* Mekong river cruises
* Cafés and temples
* A lazy day doing very little!
Then take a bus for 3 / 4 hours north
-
Nong Khiaw, Laos

* Kayaking
It’s much quieter than Luang Prabang.
-
Muang Ngoy, Laos
This little village has:
* No real traffic
* Riverside guesthouses
* Hammocks
* Great hiking
* A wonderfully relaxed atmosphere
Correct Stippl/Google spelling: Muang Ngoi or Muang Ngoi Neua
Atmosphere: The quietest stop in Laos
Why keep it: Riverside scenery, walks and a proper change of pace
Why only three nights: Longer might feel too quiet for us
Next transport: Boat back to Nong Khiaw, then minivan or shared transport towards Luang Prabang
-
Vang Vieng, Laos
Once known mainly for partying, it’s now much more about adventure and scenery.
Highlights include:

* Incredible Mountain View’s
The best place in Laos for paramotoring is Vang Vieng. It’s famous worldwide for flying over dramatic limestone mountains, the Nam Song River, rice paddies, and lagoons. Most flights are tandem with an experienced pilot, so you don’t need any experience. Flights are usually at sunrise or sunset, when the scenery is at its best.

-
Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam
Vietnam — south to north
Travel day: Vientiane–Ho Chi Minh City–Phu Quoc
29 December 2026
Book this as either:
One connecting itinerary: Vientiane → Ho Chi Minh City → Phu Quoc
or, when schedules are released:
Separate tickets with a large safety margin: Vientiane → Ho Chi Minh City, then Ho Chi Minh City → Phu Quoc.
I would allow at least four hours between separate tickets because you may need to clear immigration, collect luggage and check in again.
Do not choose a late-night arrival. Aim to reach Phu Quoc during the afternoon or early evening.
-
Phú Quốc, Vietnam
This is deliberately two days before New Year’s Eve, so there is no frantic travel on 31 December.
Stay around Long Beach, preferably near the central Duong Dong end—not an isolated northern resort.
This gives you:
* Busy beach bars
* Sunset venues
* Restaurants within walking distance
* Music and organised New Year events
* A tropical beach celebration
* Lively without being Patong-level mayhem
You spend 31 December fully settled, not on a plane, ferry or bus.
