Herceg Novi, Montenegro
Herceg Novi is one of Montenegro’s most charming coastal towns, known for its steep hills, stone streets, and impressive network of staircases. It is often called “the city of a thousand steps” (sometimes humorously described as having over 100,000 steps), so be prepared for plenty of walking and climbing.
The town has a lively atmosphere, especially during the summer months, with numerous cafés, restaurants, and a beautiful seaside promenade. Many streets in the Old Town are very narrow, so drive carefully if you’re arriving by car.
Parking can be difficult to find during the high season. A convenient public parking option is available here:

If you’re staying overnight nearby, this parking area offers overnight parking for approximately €10–15 per night:

Recommended activities:
* Take a boat tour to the Blue Cave (Plava Špilja), one of Montenegro’s most famous natural attractions, where the sunlight creates an incredible turquoise glow inside the cave.
* Most boat tours also stop at nearby beaches and hidden coves that are only accessible by sea, making it one of the best ways to explore the Luštica Peninsula.
* Walk along the Šetalište Pet Danica promenade, visit the historic Old Town, and, if you enjoy panoramic views, climb to the Kanli Kula or Forte Mare fortresses.

Kotor, Montenegro
Kotor is one of Montenegro’s most iconic destinations and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Walking through its medieval Old Town feels like stepping into an open-air museum, with narrow stone streets, charming squares, historic churches, and centuries-old architecture.
One of the highlights is the hike to the San Giovanni (St. John’s) Fortress, which rewards you with breathtaking panoramic views over the Bay of Kotor. The climb is steep but absolutely worth the effort, especially early in the morning or around sunset.
For camper vans, one of the most convenient parking areas is located here:
* https://maps.app.goo.gl/1tiheP9MiNzuLPTt6?g_st=ic
Avoid parking in unauthorized areas around the Old Town. Parking enforcement is active throughout the year, especially during the tourist season, and fines can be expensive. Paid parking areas fill up quickly in summer, so arriving early is recommended.
Vrmac (Above Kotor)
If you’re looking for a peaceful overnight stop, Mount Vrmac offers several free spots suitable for camper vans. The area is surrounded by dense forest, providing plenty of shade during hot summer days, while many locations offer spectacular views over the Bay of Kotor.
A recommended overnight location:

The road to Vrmac is narrow and winding, so drive carefully. Some tree branches lean over the road and can easily scratch or damage larger vehicles such as camper vans or motorhomes. Taking the corners slowly is highly recommended.
If you have extra time, Vrmac is also a fantastic area for hiking and exploring old Austro-Hungarian military fortifications hidden throughout the mountain.

Niksic, Montenegro
Nikšić
Nikšić is Montenegro’s second-largest city, located in the central part of the country. While it is less visited than the coastal towns, it offers a more authentic local atmosphere, lower prices, and serves as an excellent base for exploring Montenegro’s lakes and mountains.
The city is well known as the home of Nikšićko Pivo, Montenegro’s most famous beer, making it a great place to enjoy traditional local restaurants and cafés without the crowds or higher prices found on the coast.
Camping & Overnight Stops
One of the biggest advantages of staying around Nikšić is the number of peaceful lakes nearby where you can spend the night for free.
Recommended locations include:
* Lake Krupac – a popular freshwater lake just a few minutes from the city, with several quiet spots suitable for camper vans and beautiful sunset views.
* Lake Slano (Slano Lake) – another excellent free overnight option, offering a peaceful atmosphere surrounded by nature.
Kapetanovo Lake
About one hour from Nikšić, Kapetanovo Lake is one of Montenegro’s hidden gems. Surrounded by mountains and untouched nature, it is an ideal destination if you’re looking to escape the crowds and enjoy hiking, photography, or simply relaxing in a peaceful alpine setting.
The road is mostly accessible but becomes narrower and rougher near the lake, so drive carefully, especially with larger camper vans. The reward is a spectacular natural landscape that remains far less crowded than Montenegro’s more famous tourist destinations

Pluzine, Montenegro
Plužine
Plužine is a small mountain town in northwestern Montenegro, best known for its stunning natural surroundings and the spectacular Piva Lake. Scenic Drive to Žabljak
From Plužine, continue your journey towards Žabljak via Trsa instead of taking the faster main road. This mountain route is considered one of the most beautiful drives in Montenegro, passing through the Piva Nature Park with endless meadows, forests, limestone peaks, and almost no traffic.
The area is incredibly peaceful, making it an excellent place to stop, enjoy the scenery, and even spend the night in a camper van. There are many roadside pull-offs where overnight parking is generally possible, allowing you to wake up surrounded by some of Montenegro’s most spectacular mountain landscapes.

Žabljak, Montenegro
Žabljak
Žabljak is Montenegro’s highest mountain town and the gateway to Durmitor National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site renowned for its dramatic peaks, glacial lakes, deep canyons, and excellent hiking opportunities. Whether you visit in summer or winter, it is one of the country’s top destinations for outdoor enthusiasts.
Black Lake (Crno Jezero)
The most famous attraction is Black Lake (Crno Jezero), located just outside the town. Surrounded by dense pine forests and the impressive Durmitor mountains, it is one of Montenegro’s most photographed natural landmarks.
If you’re visiting by camper van or car, it is usually more convenient to park in the town centre and walk to the lake. The walk takes around 20–30 minutes, while parking closer to the lake is significantly more expensive, especially during the tourist season.
Vražje Lake
If you prefer a quieter alternative, head to Vražje Lake, located about 10 km from Žabljak. The lake is far less crowded than Black Lake and offers a peaceful setting surrounded by open meadows and mountain views.
There are suitable places to park right next to the lake, making it an excellent location for free overnight parking in a camper van. It is a perfect spot to enjoy a quiet evening, watch the sunset, and experience the tranquillity of northern Montenegro away from the crowds.
Don’t Miss
Besides its lakes, Žabljak is an excellent base for exploring Durmitor’s hiking trails, driving the spectacular Durmitor Ring, crossing the famous Đurđevića Tara Bridge, or experiencing the adrenaline of zip-lining and rafting on the Tara River. Even if you only spend a day here, the surrounding scenery makes it one of the highlights of any road trip through Montenegro.
-
Djurdjevica Tara Bridge, Montenegro
Đurđevića Tara Bridge
The Đurđevića Tara Bridge is one of Montenegro’s most famous landmarks, stretching high above the spectacular Tara River Canyon. When it was completed, it was one of the largest concrete arch bridges in Europe and remains one of the country’s most photographed viewpoints.
The bridge offers breathtaking views over the canyon and is a popular stop for visitors exploring Durmitor National Park. Adventure lovers can also find one of Montenegro’s most famous zip lines here, providing an unforgettable ride across the canyon.
Please note: the bridge is currently undergoing renovation works, so some areas may have restricted access and the overall experience may not be as impressive as usual. It is still worth stopping for the panoramic views if you’re passing through the area, but it’s a good idea to check the latest road and construction updates before visiting.
-
Biogradska Gora, Montenegro
Biogradska Gora National Park
Biogradska Gora National Park is one of Montenegro’s oldest national parks and is home to one of the last remaining primeval forests in Europe. Although smaller and less visited than Durmitor, it offers a peaceful atmosphere and is an excellent destination for those looking to enjoy nature away from the crowds.
At the heart of the park lies Biogradsko Lake, a beautiful glacial lake surrounded by centuries-old trees. A well-maintained walking trail circles the lake, making it an easy and relaxing walk suitable for visitors of all ages.
Unlike some of Montenegro’s more popular attractions, Biogradska Gora is usually much quieter, allowing you to experience the sounds of nature, fresh mountain air, and untouched forests at a slower pace.
For those with more time, the park also offers longer hiking trails leading to mountain viewpoints, alpine meadows, and several glacial lakes hidden deeper within the Bjelasica Mountains. It is an ideal stop for anyone looking to experience Montenegro’s unspoiled natural beauty beyond the busy tourist hotspots.

Gusinje, Montenegro
Gusinje
Gusinje is a small town in the far northeast of Montenegro, close to the Albanian border. While the town itself is quiet, it serves as the gateway to some of the country’s most spectacular mountain scenery within Prokletije National Park.
Grebaje Valley
The Grebaje Valley is one of Montenegro’s most breathtaking alpine landscapes, surrounded by dramatic limestone peaks, dense forests, and crystal-clear mountain streams. It is an excellent starting point for some of the best hiking trails in the Prokletije Mountains.
You can stay overnight for free at the entrance to the valley in a camper van or motorhome. The overnight parking itself is free, but an entrance fee is charged to access the national park.
Oko Skakavice
Another must-visit attraction is Oko Skakavice (“The Eye of Skakavica”), a remarkable natural spring with incredibly clear turquoise water. Hidden among the mountains, it is one of Montenegro’s lesser-known gems and well worth the short hike.
Stargazing
One of the most memorable experiences in the Grebaje Valley begins after sunset. On clear, moonless nights, the absence of light pollution creates exceptional conditions for stargazing. The Milky Way stretches clearly across the sky, and thousands of stars become visible, making the valley feel truly magical. If you’re spending the night here, don’t miss the opportunity to step outside after dark and enjoy one of the best night skies in Montenegro.

Rijeka Crnojevića
Rijeka Crnojevića is a picturesque historic village in central Montenegro, located where the Rijeka Crnojevića River flows into Lake Skadar National Park. Stari Bar, Montenegro
Bar & Stari Bar
Bar is Montenegro’s sunniest coastal town, enjoying more sunny days each year than anywhere else in the country. While the modern city is a lively port with long promenades and beaches, the real highlight is Stari Bar (Old Bar), one of the oldest and most fascinating historical sites in Montenegro.
Walking through Stari Bar feels like stepping back in time. The ancient stone streets, fortress walls, Ottoman architecture, and mountain backdrop create a unique atmosphere unlike anywhere else on the Montenegrin coast.
A visit wouldn’t be complete without seeing the Old Olive Tree (Stara Maslina), estimated to be more than 2,000 years old. It is one of the oldest living olive trees in Europe and remains a symbol of the region’s rich history and olive-growing tradition.
Food & Drinks
Stari Bar is one of the best places in Montenegro to enjoy traditional local cuisine. Stone courtyards and small family-run restaurants create a relaxed atmosphere, making it an excellent place to stop for lunch or dinner.
For a meal with a beautiful panoramic view just outside the town, this is highly recommended:

Ulcinj, Montenegro
Ulcinj
Ulcinj is Montenegro’s southernmost coastal town, known for its long sandy beaches, relaxed atmosphere, and strong Mediterranean and Ottoman influences. While the Old Town is rich in history and offers beautiful views over the Adriatic Sea, it is not recommended to visit with a camper van or motorhome. The streets are extremely narrow, traffic can be congested during the summer, and suitable parking is very limited.
Velika Plaža & Ada Bojana
For camper travellers, the real highlight of the Ulcinj area is Velika Plaža (Long Beach), which stretches for nearly 13 km all the way to Ada Bojana. This is one of the longest sandy beaches on the Adriatic and is famous for its wide open spaces, beach bars, kitesurfing, and spectacular sunsets.
At the southern end, Ada Bojana offers a unique landscape where the Bojana River meets the Adriatic Sea. The area is known for its fresh seafood restaurants, peaceful riverside atmosphere, and beautiful natural surroundings.
Driving Tips
When visiting Velika Plaža, be extremely careful not to drive your camper van onto the soft sand unless you are absolutely certain the ground is firm. Every summer, many vehicles become stuck in the sand, and recovering a heavy camper can be both difficult and expensive. Stay on designated roads and parking areas whenever possible.
If you’re looking to experience the best of Ulcinj, spending your time along Velika Plaža and Ada Bojana is generally far more rewarding than attempting to drive through the busy Old Town with a larger vehicle.
Personal Recommendation
If you’re looking for a great place to relax with a coffee and dessert, this is my favourite spot in Montenegro. It offers a beautiful atmosphere, excellent coffee, delicious cakes, and stunning views—perfect for taking a break during your road trip.

Valdanos, Montenegro
Valdanos
Valdanos is one of the most peaceful and unspoiled parts of Montenegro’s southern coast. Located just a few kilometres from Ulcinj, it is famous for its ancient olive groves, with tens of thousands of olive trees surrounding a quiet bay and pebble beach. The area feels far removed from the busy tourist beaches, making it an ideal place to relax and enjoy nature.
Unlike Velika Plaža, Valdanos Beach is usually much less crowded, even during the peak summer season. The crystal-clear water, natural shade provided by olive and pine trees, and peaceful atmosphere make it one of the best places to spend a relaxing day by the sea.
Food & Coffee
If you’re looking for a great place to enjoy coffee, lunch, or dinner surrounded by centuries-old olive trees, I highly recommend Carolea Villas & Restaurant. It combines Mediterranean and traditional Montenegrin cuisine with a beautiful natural setting, making it one of the hidden gems of the Ulcinj area.

Buljarica, Montenegro
Buljarica
Buljarica is a quiet coastal village located between Petrovac and Sutomore, making it an excellent stop for travellers looking to escape the busier tourist resorts. It is particularly popular with camper van and motorhome travellers thanks to its relaxed atmosphere and spacious surroundings.
The main attraction is Buljarica Beach, one of the longest beaches on Montenegro’s Adriatic coast. Despite its size, it remains far less crowded than many of the country’s more famous beaches, even during the peak summer season.
Camping
Buljarica is one of the best places on the coast for camper travellers, offering several campsites close to the beach with easy access, plenty of space, and a peaceful atmosphere. It’s an ideal location to spend a few nights, enjoy the sea, and slow down after visiting Montenegro’s busier coastal towns.
If you’re looking for a quieter alternative to Budva or Ulcinj, Buljarica is an excellent choice. Its combination of a long beach, nearby campsites, and relaxed surroundings makes it one of the best camper-friendly destinations on the Montenegrin coast.
-
Luštica, Montenegro
Luštica Peninsula
The Luštica Peninsula is one of Montenegro’s most unspoiled coastal regions, offering a completely different experience from the busy tourist towns. Hidden beaches, crystal-clear water, olive groves, and small fishing villages make it a perfect destination for travellers looking for peace and authentic Mediterranean scenery.
Unlike Budva or Kotor, Luštica remains relatively quiet, even during the summer, making it an excellent place to slow down and enjoy nature.
Camping
Two highly recommended places for camper vans and motorhomes are:
* Camp Rt Veslo – a peaceful campsite close to the sea, ideal for swimming, snorkelling, and relaxing in a natural setting.
* Camp Rt Mačka – another excellent option with a quiet atmosphere and easy access to the coastline.
Driving Tips
Driving around Luštica requires extra care. Many of the roads are very narrow, with sharp bends and limited visibility. There are also numerous dead-end roads, so it’s worth checking your route before setting off, especially if you’re driving a larger camper van or motorhome.
Take your time, drive slowly, and don’t be surprised if you occasionally need to reverse to let another vehicle pass. The spectacular coastal views and peaceful atmosphere make the journey well worth the extra care.
