Appenzell, Switzerland
Start with the iconic Ebenalp hike to the cliffside Aescher restaurant, one of Switzerland's most photographed spots. Extend to the peaceful Seealpsee if energy allows after the early flight. The Appenzell region rewards early arrivals before day-trippers show up.
-
Triesenberg, Liechtenstein
Perched at 940m above the Rhine Valley, Triesenberg offers sweeping views into Austria and Switzerland from your hotel balcony. Hotel Oberland has a sauna on request — ideal for post-hike recovery. Liechtenstein is one of the world's smallest countries and often overlooked; the village has a quiet, unhurried Alpine charm.
-
Malbun, Liechtenstein
Liechtenstein's only ski and hiking resort, just 10 minutes from Triesenberg. Take the chairlift to Sareiserjoch at 2,000m and tackle the Fürstensteig — a classic cliff-hugging ridge route toward the Drei Schwestern peaks. Check FOCA drone maps before flying; stay clear of Balzers and Vaduz Castle no-fly zones.
-
Flims, Switzerland
Flims sits at 1,100m in the Surselva region above the dramatic Rhine Gorge. The Pinut Via Ferrata is the headline activity here — a 2–3 hour route with big exposure and brilliant views. The village itself is relaxed and well-stocked, making it a good base before the long drive day ahead.
-
Andermatt, Switzerland
Andermatt is the gateway to some of Switzerland's finest Alpine passes, sitting at the crossroads of the Gotthard, Furka, and Oberalp routes. Pass through en route to the Furka Pass summit at 2,429m — expect genuine cold, wind, and possible snow patches even in August. The classic Furka view of the Rhône Glacier is one of the great Swiss road moments.
-
St. Niklaus, Switzerland
A quiet Mattertal village at 1,130m, St. Niklaus is the overnight base before your Zermatt day trip — and crucially, it has a direct train to Zermatt in about 39 minutes without needing to drive to Täsch. Hotel-B&B Alpenrösli is small and welcoming with classic mountain views. Stock up here before heading to the car-free zone.
-
Zermatt, Switzerland
The Matterhorn Glacier Paradise at 3,883m is your snow and glacier fix — remarkable even in summer, with year-round skiing and glacier caves. Gornergrat (3,089m) is a strong alternative if you prefer a full panorama of 29 four-thousanders including the Matterhorn. Note that Zermatt is heavily restricted for drone flights — check the FOCA map and plan accordingly.
-
Lauterbrunnen, Switzerland
Lauterbrunnen's valley is carved by 72 waterfalls, with Staubbach Falls dropping 297m right into the village — genuinely dramatic even by Swiss standards. Hotel Hornenpub has a generous check-in window running until 00:30, so there's no pressure if the Zermatt day runs long. Park your car at Stechelberg the next morning — it stays there while you're in car-free Gimmelwald.
-
Gimmelwald, Switzerland
Tiny, car-free Gimmelwald at 1,350m is reached only by cable car from Stechelberg — which keeps it blissfully quiet. The Mürren–Gimmelwald Via Ferrata runs 2.2km along a 400m sheer cliff face and descends directly into the village — one of the most dramatic via ferrata finishes in the Alps. Your room is 50m from the cable car station; evenings here are genuinely still.
-
Grindelwald, Switzerland
Grindelwald sits directly below the North Face of the Eiger, and the Rotstock Via Ferrata traces the base of that legendary wall — accessible via the Eiger Express from Grindelwald Grund. Aim to finish Rotstock and reach the First gondola station (Grindelwald Terminal) by 17:00 at the latest for the last ascent to Berggasthaus First at 2,200m. Once the day-trippers leave around 6pm, the First Cliff Walk at sunset is yours alone.
-
Stoos, Switzerland
Stoos is a car-free village above Lake Lucerne, reached by the world's steepest funicular — a dramatic arrival in itself. The Fronalpstock ridge walk at around 1,900m offers commanding views over four lakes and the central Swiss Alps with a fraction of the crowds you'd find on Pilatus or Titlis. A strong closing act before the final drive to Rümlang.
-
Rümlang, Switzerland
Rümlang is a quiet commuter village just 10 minutes from Zürich Airport — purely a practical overnight before your 06:30 departure. Plan to leave around 04:00–04:15 and return the rental car well ahead of the 07:00 deadline. Let your host know the night before about the pre-dawn departure so key handover is arranged in advance.
